Grand Canyon's Best Airplane Tours For Memorial Day Holiday

By Ione Mahler

If you're planning a Vegas getaway this Memorial Day weekend, then you should consider taking a side trip to the Grand Canyon. Airplane tours are easy on your budget and they go to the South Rim or the West Rim. It's busy at the Canyon this time of year though, so you want to buy your tickets early, before they sell out.

Choosing Between The West And South Rim

Vegas is situated closest to the West Rim, but if you want to tour the South Rim, you can start your tour in Tusayan, Arizona. If you drive to Tusayan, you can start your air tour there, but you can also fly out of Vegas to the West or South Rim.

The flight from Vegas isn't wasted time, because you'll see many interesting sights from the air. For example, you'll get a fantastic view of the Hoover Dam and Lake Mead from the air. The West Rim tours can be air only, or you can book a landing tour and spend some time at the Canyon. You'll see many scenic views as your airplane circles over the Canyon and heads back to Vegas. Landing tours are great though because you can add on additional adventures.

Landing at the West Rim

The West Rim is great for hiking since it has many scenic trails for all levels of ability, and it is also home to the famous Skywalk. The Skywalk is a massive lookout platform that is made from steel and glass. You'll feel like you're floating on air as you stand on a glass floor 70 feet beyond the edge of the rim and 4000 feet above the Canyon floor.

For added fun, you can add on a helicopter ride down to the bottom of the Canyon. This is a very popular tour option, and adds a lot to your trip. When you're on the Canyon floor, you can enjoy a champagne picnic or take a boat ride along the scenic Colorado River. Seeing the Canyon walls towering above you is a very memorable sight to behold and that's one reason bottom landing tours are so popular.

Touring The South Rim

Whether you start your tour in Arizona or take the hour long flight from Vegas to the South Rim, you'll be treated to many wonderful views during your tour. The airplane tour of the South Rim departs from Tusayan and it gives you about an hour of flight time during which you fly over about 70 percent of the whole National Park. This is the only tour that covers so much ground. Some sights include the remote wilderness of the North Rim, and the widest and deepest section of the Canyon. The South Rim is less crowded than the West Rim. If you want to go to the Canyon for the purpose of viewing natural landmarks and scenic beauty, then the South Rim is for you.

Be Prepared For Summer Temperatures

It can get extremely hot at the Canyon at this time of year, so if you're going for a landing tour at the West Rim, make sure you are prepared. Wear some thin and light clothing that covers as much skin as possible, and bring plenty of sunblock with you. You'll also need some snacks like trail mix or energy bars, and don't forget your bottled water.

Wrapping Up

Hopefully, you're convinced to take a tour of the Canyon over the holiday. Don't forget to buy your tour early, and do it online with your credit card to lock in your seats. This gets you the lowest rate and instantly reserves your seats. Try to get your tour two weeks ahead of time, because if you wait longer than that, you may have to pay more. You'll have a lot of options and upgrades for creating a fun and exciting day at the Canyon. The Canyon is one of the most unique natural attractions on earth, and Memorial Day is an excellent time of year to visit it.
