Learn The Facts On Aircraft Upholstery

By Carl Snyder

The body of most vehicles, ships, planes and other transport means are covered by fabrics in the inside part. These materials make the environment very friendly for the passengers, especially during long distance travelling. In aircraft construction, most parts are made up of different types of clothes and other fabric materials. The aircraft upholstery improves the condition inside as well as providing safety to the passengers.

The skeleton body of a plane does not look very attractive. By using them to cover the frame body, the beauty is improved. The materials also enhance the safety of travellers as well as making the environment friendly. The soft materials used to cover the seats, allow people to remain seated for a long time while travelling over long distances.

The fabrics on the walls and the floor of a plane play a very crucial role. Most of them are light in weight. This property contributes to reducing the density of the plane. Besides, they cover the metallic parts making the inside part look beautiful. The materials also prevent passengers from being in contact with the metals used in construction thereby enhancing safety as they reduce sudden impacts.

When the plane is landing or taking off, the passengers have to be properly cushioned on their seats. To ensure this, the seat is usually made of rigid materials in interior layers. On the outer layer, soft materials such as foam are used. On the outside, different materials can be employed to cover the inner materials.

The walls and bulkheads of a plane are also important as far as comfort and safety are concerned. They protect the passengers from noise while travelling. They are usually covered by a flame retarding foams followed by different types of outer covering. For luxurious private jets, the outer covering of the walls and bulkheads can be leather. In the case of commercial aeroplane specially formulated fabric that offers low smoke toxicity are usually used.

The carpeting should be carefully selected because not all carpets are designed for planes. Companies produce a wide variety of carpets which are specifically meant for planes. Most of them are made of wool or nylon. They should not be heavy as heavy materials demand high fuel consumption. Also, they should be strong and comfortable to the underfoot. Lastly, the carpets should satisfy the industry recommended standards for safety and resistance to flame.

When constructing the interior parts of a helicopter, aspects such as weight to fuel ratio, resistance to fire as well as comfort must be considered while working with these materials. Also, if fabrics are used, they must satisfy the burn test, heat release and smoke toxicity resistance standards.

From the above discussion, it is clearly evident that these materials are very useful in the construction of aircraft. They make travelling very enjoyable and safe. By making the plane light, they reduce fuel consumption thereby reducing the cost of transport. It is, therefore, necessary for the manufacturers to choose correct types of material during the construction process.
